Chase Spellman is one of the top quarterbacks in Wisconsin

Paul Gable

The state of Wisconsin traditionally turns out some premier football talent year after year and Kettle Moraine High School quarterback Chase Spellman is one player to keep an eye on for the upcoming season.

The junior quarterback is actually following in his father's footsteps when it comes to being a standout football player, as his father was a linebacker at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.

"My dad got me into football. He played college football and that was his sport and because of that, I fell in love with the game. He had some workouts/ training camps with a few different NFL teams. What I enjoy most about the QB position is setting up my teammates for success. I love just putting the ball in my playmakers hands and watching them do their thing and go to work. What I enjoy most about football is winning. I love to win and compete and go out there on Friday nights with my brothers. We have a huge season coming up this year," Spellman told Heartland Sports Report.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 220-pound signal caller threw for 1,945 and 27 touchdowns for Kettle Moriane, who advanced to the semifinals as the sixth seed.

Y"eah we did have an amazing season. We fell short of our ultimate goal of a state championship with was really tough on us but making it all the way to the semifinals as a 6 seed is pretty dang good," Spellman said.

But, perhaps, the most impressive thing is he put up those kind of numbers while playing with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

"Playing with the torn labrum in my throwing shoulder was extremely hard and frustrating. I’ve been playing with it, but I had no idea until last March and it was too late to get the surgery so I just played through it like I normally have and got surgery after the season. I was on a pitch count all year long during practice and could only throw a limited amount because I wanted to limit the pain because it was so bad. The worst part was when playoffs started and it got cold. My arm was in so much pain and could not get warm and it was just all around terrible. I have begun a little bit of rehab. Not much but that’s expected pretty early. Things will start turning up soon so I’m excited," Spellman admitted.

And, now that he will enter the upcoming season with a healthy throwing shoulder, Spellman has set a lofty goal for he and his teammates.

"Going into next year, we are winning state. Plain and simple. That’s the goal and that’s what’s going to happen. We have the best group of guys to do it with too. So many returners with experience. We’ve been in the big games obviously so we aren’t afraid of the moment. No reason for us to not win conference also," Spellman said.

For his career, he has tossed for over 3,300 yards and 39 touchdowns. While some may be surprised with his success, the junior quarterback is not, stating he knows the amount of work he has put in.

"I put my everything into this game and there is never a time where I am not working on something football related. Whether it be in the weight room before school at 5:45am or watching and breaking down film by myself or with my quarterback coach... I put in the work 24/7 and it’s what I expect," Spellman said.

Spellman told HSR that he has had conversations with several schools about playing at the next level and welcomes the opportunity. The list of schools he has been talking with include: Wisconsin, Iowa, Texas A&M, Cincinnati, Georgia, Texas, Memphis, Toledo, and Oklahoma State. He added that both Notre Dame and Michigan State want him to throw for them once he's healthy.

"Recruiting’s good. I’ve been talking to a number of schools, but it’s tough because they are waiting to offer once they know my shoulder's 100 percent and see me throw. What I look for in a school is a coaching staff that is going to develop me and get me ready for the next level. And of course a winning culture. That is huge.
