Ever since he was a child, Anthony Bisra has had either a basketball or a football in his hand and been involved in a game.
"I got into football at a young age, but only played flag football until fifth grade where I switched over to tackle football. I’ve played basketball since I was three years old. Football definitely helps me prepare for basketball with the physicality and toughness that comes with football and basketball definitely prepares me for playing football by helping out my speed and quickness on the field," the 6-foot-5-inch, 270-pound Joliet Catholic (IL) standout recently told Heartland Sports Report.
The hard work the two-sport athlete has paid off on both the hardwood and the gridiron, as Birsa played a vital role in the Hilltoppers capturing the Class 4A football state title last season.
"That was an amazing experience and I am super grateful for my teammates and coaches for that experience. It was an awesome feeling and we hope to do it again next year," Birsa said of the state crown. "Although I do put a lot of hard work in, I am surprised by my success and I attribute it to my hard work, my great teammates, the leadership of my coaches, and the love and support from my family."
Colleges are starting to take stock of Birsa and his ability, as Eastern Kentucky University recently offered.
"I’m looking for a school that really wants me there for who I am and makes it feel like I am part of a family. Coaches have said that they really like my athleticism and my ability to finish plays. Coaches that I have talked to also like that I am a leader and I’m not afraid to ask questions," Birsa said.
While some may relax after winning a state crown, Birsa refuses. Instead, he has his sights on helping Joliet Catholic claim another state title.
"My goals for next season are to make the all conference and all state teams. Most of all, I want to be a great leader and win another state championship with my teammates and coaches," he said.
