Glenbard South RB ready to prove doubters wrong at next level

Paul Gable

Football. Family. God.

For Glenbard South High School (IL) running back Trevor Burnett, those are the most important things in his life and what drives the star each and every day.

It's been that way since he can remember and all three are woven together.

"Football has always been a family thing. So I fell in love with it right way. One thing I love about the game, and it has proven itself many times is whatever you put into this game, the outcome will show. That’s one thing I love about the game," Burnett told Heartland Sports Report.

As a youth, faced and overcame adversity that other children may not have endured, but he says the experiences helped mold him.

"My experience with my life allowed me to grow up fast and understand the true meaning of life. It allowed me to be humble and become a hard worker, which translates to the field. It also showed me to never take anything for granted," Burnett said.

And, when times became too tough, Burnett looked inward and upward, believing in his faith and trusting that God would help provide.

"My faith never dies even when times are hard. I just stay true to myself and carry that with me through life," said Burnett.

The star running back rushed for 2,113 yards and 20 touchdowns in 10 games as a senior, and has garnered quite a bit of attention as he is a three-star player who is ranked as the 40th best senior prospect in Illinois and the 161st best running back in America in the Class of '22.

There were several times during the season when opposing defenses knew what was coming and still could not stop or bring down Burnett.

"Honestly, it feels good because we already know they know but we are still going to come at your necks. Every snap I’m thinking about making the big play each and every time because that’s my job," he said.

In addition, he drew the attention of several colleges along the way as he received offers from the likes of: Army, Air Force, Kent State, Eastern Illinois, Indiana State, South Dakota State and Northern Iowa. However, he opted to accept a preferred walk-on option at Illinois.

Why did he opt to go that route?

Well, according to Burnett, it was an easy decision.

"I chose Illinois because I know that is where I need to be. I know my talent and ability to play the game of football. So why not do it there, for your home state? Playing instate wasn’t really important. It didn’t matter if I did or not. I just needed an opportunity," Burnett said.

As for his goals once he arrives in Champaign, Burnett said he hopes to develop more as a player and gain a better understanding of the game at the next level, as well as getting faster and stronger.

"And proving everybody wrong. Even with an offer, I still have to prove myself. Honestly, everything is motivating to me," Burnett said.
