For Kytan Fyfe, football truly has been a way of life.
It has been that way for the Grand Island Senior High School (Neb.) standout for as long as he can remember.
"I come from a football family. My grandpa played college ball and all his brothers had NFL tryouts with teams. My grandpa's brother, Doyle Fyfe, was the first athlete inducted into the University of Nebraska-Kearney Hall of Fame. My dad played college ball at Kearney, and my brother also played college football at the University of Nebraska. I love the brotherhood of football, all the hard work it takes to put into a football team with your teammates. I also love the physical aspect and the strategic plans that go into it to attacking your opponent," Fyfe told Heartland Sports Report.
As for feeling pressure to continue the family tradition of playing football, Fyfe said there was never any.
"No I don’t feel any pressure. I love football and put a lot of time and effort into the game, so when the opportunity came to continue playing, it was a no brainer I wanted to keep playing," he said.
As quarterback for the Islanders, Fyfe threw for 1,589 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also added 752 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Playing quarterback came natural for Fyfe, as he learned from his brother. However, he says it was another position that he really found a home at.
"I’ve always been a quarterback growing up learning from my brother. I actually found my Knack on the defensive side my junior year of high school. Outside linebacker is the position I will be playing in college. I was a super state free safety in high school but I will be getting moved down to outside linebacker in college," Fyfe said.
Defensively, Fyfe notched 61 tackles and an interception this past season.
Fyfe admits he enjoyed playing both sides of the ball during his high school career.
"Being able to play both sides of the ball is what I will remember most. It was so fun and I will miss offense a lot. I loved offense but I was better on the defensive side," Fyfe said.
Fyfe is looking forward to taking his talents to South Dakota State University, a school he liked because of its standards.
"I liked it because of the culture they have. They are black and white and they have high standards. Coming from GISH and Coach Tomlin, I knew this school will be really good for me. And obviously they also really good at football and compete for the national championship in the FCS year in and year out," Fyfe said.
He told HSR he will enter South Dakota State with some lofty goals he is looking to accomplish immediately.
"I’m very excited and eager about it. I hope I can make the traveling list next year. I am redshirting though but with being able to play in four games, I hope I can do that," Fyfe said.
