Recruiting begins to take off for Walled Lake Western star

Paul Gable

Like many boys growing up, Darius Taylor was given a football as a baby and he carried the ball around everywhere.

The actions of his youth continue today, as Taylor continues cherish the feeling of a football in his hands as he recently wrapped up a productive junior season at Walled Lake Western (Mich.).

"With my father being a former football player in high school, I’ve had access to footballs since I could hold one. As soon as I could join a team I did. I started playing little league at 6 years old and I fell in love. I enjoy the brotherhood and the atmosphere of the game. I love being under the lights," Taylor recently told Heartland Sports Report.

And like many current players, whose fathers played a sport, Taylor is excited about following in his father's footsteps and carrying the legacy forward each time on the field.

"Continuing on with his legacy is motivation. With my father and most of his close friends (uncles ) being former football players, I’m constantly receiving insight and making connections with all things football. Although there is no pressure from him, going to college has been a big dream of mine and he supports that and is content with allowing me to follow my dreams," Taylor acknowledged.

A season ago, as a junior, Taylor put up big numbers as a receiver and running back and had a knack for finding the end zone. For example, he rushed up 296 yards and four trips to the end zone against Lakeland in a 42-10 victory.

"Looking in hindsight, I had a great season playing and made up some great stats. We had some great moments. As always there is room for improvement, so I’m looking forward to off season training, growing mentally and physically. Going into my senior season, I want to ensure that I’m functioning as the best player I can," Taylor said.

On the season, Taylor carried the football 136 times for 1,379 yards and he recorded 621 yards receiving for 24 total touchdowns. In addition, he had a kick returned for a score, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, four interceptions and averaged 11 yards per carry and 18 yards per catch.

With numbers like that, it is easy to see why his recruiting has exploded recently. The class of 2023 prospect currently holds offers from the likes of: Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Toledo and Vanderbilt.

"My recruitment has really blown up. I’m getting text everyday all day. I’m just looking for a place where I fit in with their system and feel welcomed. My coaches have always told me I had it in me to play college ball. I’ve just been waiting for that day to come," Taylor said.

Indeed, his day has truly come.
